How Ability LMS is Different from Saba

Courses and their relationships to each other and to tracks is different in Ability than it was in Saba. Because other training programs and other campus systems reference course data, it is important to not make changes to course titles, course ID, or several other properties without evaluating the impact with the system administrators. Contact the ORA training unit. We will look for ways to accommodate your request.

As soon as a new training need is identified, contact Candace Winslow and/or email a New Course Proposal Form (DOCX) to train@ora.msu.edu. A new delivery type of an existing course may not require a form if the existing course objectives are documented.

  • Course Delivery Types

In Ability, each course has its own delivery type.

Course Type Used For Example Course Name
    Generic
    On-line
Self-paced Web-based-yraining can use any number of objects or tasks including video, PDF, link to content, quiz, sign-off acceptance. Course is updated through Manager Menu > Courses primarily through the course tabs. Weaving baskets - WBT
Scheduled Scheduled, Instructor-led-training including orientations or webinars. Each event is set-up in the Manager Menu > Master Schedule Weaving baskets - ILT
SCORM 1.2  Self-paced, online training created in courseware such as Lectora or Storyline that includes page tracking and scoring inside a single SCORM package. Course is updated using the upload folder icon in Manager Menu > Courses.  Weaving baskets - SCO
Legacy  Old course completion records migrated into Ability with no content

Each course has it's own course ID. Courses can have the same title (and should if they meet the same learning objectives).

If you need a version of your course to accommodate the special needs of a learner (e.g. print-only, offline, audio-only, one:one coaching), request a new course be created.

In Saba, a single course could have any type of delivery. Courses with multiple delivery modes were split during migration to Ability.

    Implications for compliance

If a track includes a course with multiple delivery types (different course ID), an equivalency should be set-up in case the user needs to take a different version.

When creating a report to look for course  completions, you may need to filter using "Starts with" rather than "Equals" so you get all versions of a course.

  • Security Roles

Security roles can be subdivided by Training Area and further divided by course/s.

Training Areas represent the compliance units (ACP, EHS, HRPP, HT, RCR). There are additional groups for Testing and for MSU-wide unclassifed training. Additional groups can be created.

Trainers and compliance personnel will be given access to all users, but will only be able to view and edit the course history for the courses they are assigned to. Compliance personnel will only be able to assign and removed tracks for the tracks they are assigned to.

  • Non-MSU Affiliates & Guests

Anyone without a NetID login may request guest login. CommunityID accounts will be updated (converted) upon request.

Non-MSU affiliates can also request their MSU colleague or department sponsor a temporary NetID. More info...

  • Email Schedules

Based on feedback from the MSU community, users will get additional reminders to complete their training (30, 7, 3 days before expiration).

Managers will receive advanced notice of training due dates for their subordinates (approx. 1 week in advance), as well as notification of expired and overdue training status.
